OVFC’S OPEN LETTER TO THE MAYOR REGARDING CURRENT RUBBISH COLLECTION FAILINGS

We are writing today to express the considerable distress and some anger at the situation of the rubbish and recycling on Cumbre del Sol and its surrounding areas.
After nearly 3 years of discussions with those of you responsible for the rubbish and recycling in Benitachell, nothing has changed on Cumbre del Sol. These are the types of questions we are being asked:
- Why is it a surprise that the population more than quadruples from the end of June? Each year the holiday population increases!
- Why is it a surprise that the Patronal Fiesta in the village creates extra work and therefore a workforce shortage on Cumbre del Sol during these two weeks of July?
We were forced to ask for more bins and igloos to be brought up to Cumbre and to date very few have arrived. Surely these should have been in place in May before the holiday season began? We understand that many of the men operating the collection system take a holiday over the fiesta time and so the collections are less, while the rubbish and recycling increases!
In addition, you will remember that we advised that taking the rubbish to a collection point was not a destination. Holiday makers do not make a special journey with rubbish!, It is something we do when we leave the mountain and we place it in bins on the way. Therefore you will find that the north entrance point is underused (it is hidden away, no signs) and that Valle del Portet and Mercadona are overflowing into the road. We were concerned that there was no large collection point at the south entrance and we predicted problems for Valle del Portet. Sadly that is now the case.
What is even worse is that visitors are no longer recycling in their house as there is nowhere to recycle at the bins.
This situation is intolerable. It is disgusting. We are ashamed of what is happening. Our environment is being damaged and many of these rubbish points are actually beside peoples homes, giving health concerns. Social media, as you will know, is full of anger. Taxes have increased, house prices have increased and yet rubbish is piled high as the system fails. The anger towards the Town Hall and its government is not helpful to any of us as we work towards respect and collaboration.
We are sure that you will, of course, move to clean all areas. We ask for more bins and igloos so that we are allowed to recycle. We ask for notices ON THE BINS, as previously suggested and we ask for a meeting in September where we discuss the reality and the practical solutions.
We remain willing to work with you constructively on this problem. We hope that you will take into account our suggested solutions as we are living with it daily. We are committed to a successful outcome which is to everyone's benefit.
